Date: Sat, 6 Feb 2010 01:08:21 -0500 X-Message-Number: 2 Hey gang: I'm compiling a list of items that I will instruct my installers to do when they are in a client's home or office. These are what I would term preventive maintenance. The idea, is to find opportunities to do repairs prior to failure and/or the opportunity to replace product, again prior to failure. I will put this in the form of a checklist, but I'm trying to make a comprehensive checklist. So, following is what I'm instructing my installers. Please share your thoughts, and add items that you see wrong when you go to places a year or more after the installation. Operate the window treatment and observe the following: - Are there any obvious broken parts? 1. Check cords for wear. If restringing is called for, is it due to improper use or worn parts or poor design. 2. Check chains for discoloration, rust, etc. 3. Look at cord locks 4. Do clutches have broken parts 5. Are vertical blind vane stems broken or distorted 1. Carry vane savers to repair vertical blind louvers 6. Are the window treatments pulling straight? Do they need to be adjusted to level or be shimmed? Look at the - Are there child safety issues? 1. Break Thru tassels intact? 2. Cord Cleats or other hold downs? 3. Stops on cords so they cannot be pulled down to create a loop 4. Chain/Cord Pulleys if a continuous loop cord or chain - Motorized treatments 1. Listen to motor going up and coming down. Does the motor sound right? 2. Listen to the hardware for squeaks, grinds, etc. Is maintenance called for? 3. Check motor limits for correct position top and bottom, or at each end of the run for drapery 4. Check fabrics for signs of wear. Trim fabric, or sew fabric or rings as necessary Please share your thoughts. Date: Sat, 6 Feb 2010 07:32:12 -0800 X-Message-Number: 3 Pro's I am working on a large commercial bid in California. It requires prevailing wage to be used for the installers. This is the first time I am bidding on a project where that is required. Most of my jobs have been residential where either just myself or my local installer have done the installation. I need tips on what the process is with using multiple installers at the prevailing wage. 1. Do I need to hire them as employees of my company? 2. Do I need to get workman's comp for them? 3. What is the prevailing wage in Cal for window covering installation? Any assistance/tips you can give me is appreciated. Steve G. I have a wonderful rep who will go over the top and the extra 50 miles to make things right if there is a problem. It doesn't matter if the problem is with a picky client or a warranty issue, it is quickly and easily resolved. And I am not aware of many reputable companies who don't charge for sample books. Date: Mon, 8 Feb 2010 09:09:02 -0700 X-Message-Number: 14 Perhaps it's our location in the friendly Rocky Mountains, but I have had very good overall experience with H-D for over 18 years. We receive prompt and courteous service from their Customer Service personnel and they DO back up their products in our area. About the Graber inquiry a day or two ago, we have worked through a Graber distributor/fabricator in the Denver area ( DSC Window Fashions ), and have had 110% satisfaction with them and their service for over 16 years! I do not and will not "go direct" with any manufacturer for a couple of dollars and turn my back on reliable suppliers and jeopardize an established long-term relationship. While writing, a brief report on other related items: Tax Deduction: A recent H-D envelope containing replacement parts bore an embossed foil sticker with the message " Up to $ 1,500.00 tax benefits! " Lift Cord Incident: A 3-year old boy strangled on a cord in the bedroom recently in a Denver suburban home. No indication of the type of window covering nor the manufacturer. ( Does our industry have a suitable press item to use in questioning the pertinent details? We always see the headlines, but there seems to be no follow up ( ? ) Business $$: We decided early on that we would concentrate on larger condo developments, institutions, and also offer one-on-one custom in-home service with no obligation initial consultations and complimentary measurements, etc. We require 50% deposits on all custom installations, personally install most small jobs and supervise all others, and smile politely when asked and respond: " We have an arrangement with the bank---they don't do window coverings, and we don't take credit cards, but we'll be pleased to take your check." We have never lost a job because of this policy, and have never ( Knock on wood ) had a bad check. For those of you in the snowy East, keep warm.
