Hi Fred

The first thing I would do is order reverse roll so that the fabric comes off the front of the roller instead of the back.  That alone will give you an extra couple of inches clearance.  For shims, I would use the white UHMW board (the stuff cutting boards are made of) or MDF.  Pre drill the holes and you should be fine.  The problem with using regular wood like 1 x 2 or whatever, is that even after pre-drilling, it will split because of the small size of the shim.  If you are coming out in front of the handles as you state, make sure that the client is aware and signs off on the fact that there will be a large light gap behind the shades.  If you have a choice, I like Rory's idea better.

I have a little job to install (10 manual Draper Flexshades) in a sun room and all the windows are sets of sliding doors.  I need to clear the door handles so I intend to use Draper 2 1/4"clutch brackets with shims of approx 1/4" thickness.  How about giving me some suggestions for shimming material.

Something I can buy is preferred, but I can fabricate if necessary.  Pros please help me out.  Many of you have much more experience than I.
