WINDOW-PRO Digest for Thursday, September 24, 2009. 1. RE Buy American 2. RE: Econo 101 3. Buy American or Buy Small Business? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: RE Buy American From: "INFO"
Date: Thu, 24 Sep 2009 09:13:09 -0400 X-Message-Number: 1 RE Buy American: I'm an American manufacturer of Textiles. I sell fabric to the window covering industry. This topic brought back memories of my economics professor saying "Switzerland makes watches. If another country can make watches as well for less money, Switzerland will have to find something else to do" This Was taught to me 55 years ago.I have never forgotten it.I was happy to read about the emergence of a few furniture factories. While I don't think this will happen in the textile business, I think it will happen in some areas of manufacturing. John Morelli.... Yes, the economy is a bit rough and Yes, there is high unemployment and Yes, the world is coming to a end next Tue. at 4:34 PM PST. This argument will go on forever and each side will make valid points and each side will use stats to back up their argument. In the end it is the consumer who tells us what they want. If they want to buy designer foil made in Bogota for their windows, I'll sell designer foil made in Bogota. International trade has been going on since the beginning of time. Wasn't Columbus looking for silk and spices when he discovered America? As Eddie Izzard says, He left Plymouth and landed in Plymouth, How convenient was that? Do you think Columbus was going to make draperies from the silk? I have to say that I do have respect for Alan and other people who have a conviction and do as they say. A perfect example is Ed Begley Jr. I do have a problem with people yelling at me to stop driving my work van because it pollutes, while they fly their G5 Gulfstream to pick up phony awards for saving the planet. This brings me to my next point. How about those California Angels? What about this weather? Have you seen the new Ford Connect Van? (This van is very cool) Check out the website. Date: Thu, 24 Sep 2009 11:23:38 -0600 X-Message-Number: 3 I recall the last 'Buy American' meme. It was in the 80's. Back then the 'evil-doer' was Japan. Some of you may remember all the 'I don't drive a Rice Burner' bumper stickers. The 'attack' on the US by Japan did wake up Detroit to the need to stop making disposable cars. The 'Buy American' meme was a standard commercial theme used by Wal-Mart back then. 'Course we all know how that turned out..... If we cut out all the Imported Fabrics from our Fabric Books we'd never make a Fabric Treatment sale ( the only real profitable 'product' we sell these days ) For us it's more important to deal with Small Business. I don't recall the exact number but the the Census Bureau numbers for 2008 stating how many small businesses went out of business is staggering. Our Printer of over 20 years just went under-filed bankruptcy. Now I'm forced to use Kinkos while we look for another small printer. The consumer doesn't care where the product or materials come from. They just want a good 'value'. If we sell a chinese fabric it does keep our small business workroom going, it keeps us going, and it keeps the installer working. We live in a global economy. I've taught myself some spanish but I wish I could speak Chinese or German or French...... I understand the passion to keep this country going but 'Buying American' aint' goin' do it. Our economic success during the 90's was largely based on having a decent trade balance. That's long gone and we need to get it back. In the mean time we'll stick with supporting small business. We'd rather deal with a "small" fabricator than Hunter Douglas any day. Small Business is the real backbone of this country and it's rapidly disappearing.
