Date: Fri, 25 Sep 2009 04:14:09 -0400 X-Message-Number: 2 M.A.Plumlee's concept of buying more goods from China (which will further increase our debt to China) to help the Chinese loan us ever more money gives new meaning to the term vicious cycle. Can she not see that eventually , even the Chinese will say "enough credit" pay me ?! What do you do then , when you finally have no cash to pay for the foreign goods , no credit , and you can not get any US goods because you have cheerfully waved goodbye as all of our factories have been crated up and shipped to China. Can no one see the wisdom of making an extreme effort to buy American made window treatments whenever possible ? There is a classic european fable known as the "Pied Piper". It tells of a town full of people who did not understand the seriousness of incurring debt and the need to pay that debt. I sincerely hope that our future generations are not marched into a debtors' mountain never again to see the light of solvency . Date: Fri, 25 Sep 2009 04:41:46 -0400 X-Message-Number: 3 Insofar as Dan Johnson's comment that he makes every effort to buy from small businesses , I agree totally. I do however believe that if a customer is told that one product is made here and the other is made in China , many will choose to buy the domestically made product. Especially if the quality differences of the products are promoted . It is my feeling that this is rarely done. Most retailers don't tell their customers where their items are made. You mention that we need to get the balance of trade back. It might help if we stopped giving trade concessions to the Chinese while they are beating our brains in . We should be the ones right now who are getting the trade concessions. What crooked politicians negotiated away our ability to compete fairly ? Are any of you aware that China puts a 30% import duty on a US made car ? Shouldn't it be more the other way around ? But watching my on staff designers who would rather sell than eat or breath. They tell the consumer what they want....and the consumer is so happy when they do. Maybe we have more influence over the buying habits of our customers than we realize. Maybe we ought to maximize that. Just a thought. M. A. Date: Fri, 25 Sep 2009 09:21:16 -0400 X-Message-Number: 6 quote: "Switzerland makes watches. If another country can make watches as well for less money, Switzerland will have to find something else to do" I remember that also from Eco 101 and International Trade classes. However, when running those equations, the only factor considered was the actual cost to produce the product. Additional fluctuating costs (transportation, damage and loss of product during inter-continental shipping, etc) associated with importing products were not considered. And I always wondered why they did not factor in quality. The assumptions for all those equations were that Country A could make the product to the equal standards as Country B. And that the products would be have the same life span. As we know, this is not always the case. The old "buy American" was focused on loss of jobs, as the quality of the imported cars were considered acceptable. The current "buy American" trend is concerned with job loss combined with the quality of the product for the price. There is the perception not only that we've given away jobs overseas, but also that the quality of the goods imported from overseas is lacking. So price isn't always the determining factor. Sell quality. Smart people will spend more, if the product lasts longer, thus saving in the long run. RE: ECONOMIC STIMULUS PAYMENT This is a very exciting program. I will explain it using the Q and A formula. Q. What is an Economic Stimulus Payment? A. It is money that the federal government will send to taxpayers. Q. Where will the government get this money? A. From taxpayers. Q. So the government is giving me back my own money? A. Only a smidgen. Q. What is the purpose of this payment? A. The plan is that you will use the money to purchase a high-definition TV set, thus stimulating the economy. Q. But isn't that stimulating the economy of China? A. Shut up. Below is some helpful advice on how to best help the U.S. economy by spending your stimulus check wisely: 1. If you spend the stimulus money at Wal-Mart, the money will go to China. 2. If you spend it on gasoline, your money will go to the Middle Eastern countries. 3. If you purchase a computer, it will go to India. 4. If you purchase fruits and vegetables, it will go to Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala. 5. If you buy a car, it will go to Japan. 6. If you purchase worthless stuff, it will go to Taiwan. 7. If you pay your credit cards off, or buy stock, it will go to management bonuses, and they will hide it offshore. Instead, keep the money in America by doing the following: 1. Spending it at yard sales 2. Going to ball games. 3. Spending it on prostitutes, beer, or tattoos. These are the only businesses still operating in the U.S. (I'm going to a ball game with a tattooed hooker that I met at at yard sale , and drink beer.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Hunter Douglas Ultraglide end mount? From: MBarone183@aol.com Date: Fri, 25 Sep 2009 17:21:15 EDT X-Message-Number: 8 Hi Pro's, I need your help. Has anyone installed a HunterDouglas 3/4" Duette with Ultraglide with an end(side mount) lately? Is it really true one must resort to bolting an installation bracket to a (ugly) extension bracket and suffer a 3/4" deduction on the Duette? I thought I read about a new end mount bracket being developed but may be wrong. Any clarity input here would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
